Home on the Artillery Range

July 2, 2012 (Cocoa Beach, FL) – In addition to helping protect facilities that launch rockets into the sky, Quantum Technology Sciences, Inc (QTSI) systems can also be installed to monitor artillery ranges for munitions falling from the sky. During the week of June 25, 2012, QTSI installed the 6th Sense system, configured with QTSI’s Seismic Acoustic Impact Monitor and Assessment (SAIMA) software at Fort Sill’s artillery range in Lawton, Oklahoma. Under a U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center contract, QTSI’s system provided the ability to score and report the location accuracy of mortar and artillery impacts on active military ranges.

By combining the 6th Sense capability with QTSI’s exclusive SAIMA software and remote data processing station, the system accurately identifies the time of fire, type of weapon firing, flight times, bearing, and impact locations. The 6th Sense system and SAIMA software automatically classify a mortar or artillery round as fully exploded, partially exploded, or unexploded. Thus, QTSI’s system allows Range Officers to proactively develop range maintenance plans for unexploded ordnance to sustain the range and protect the environment. Such significant situational awareness can also be used to score, playback, and generate detailed reports of engagements for force protection, crew performance, and commander review.
